My skin smells like garlic!
This is the comment I have received from a reader some few weeks ago, he was very worried and he was going to visit a doctor to see what’s going on. So, in this post, I’m going to talk about this issue and what are some probable causes that maybe at the root of this terrible smell, I’m also going to suggest some solutions.
So, let’s start:
- The first cause of your skin smelling like garlic is coffee!
Believe me when I tell you that drinking too much coffee is going to cause your skin to smell like garlic!
I’m sure that this is going to surprise most of you, but this is the truth, coffee, when drunk in large amounts, can cause your skin to smell terrible, not only that, but it concentrates lots of aromatic compounds in your sweat which is going to give your skin a distinctive and somehow garlicky smell.
So, if you are an avid coffee drinker, and your skin smells like garlic, the first advice I’m going to give you is to stop drinking coffee altogether!
I know that this is going to sound a bit extreme, but it’s important in order to know for sure whether you are suffering from a serious problem or you are just drinking too much coffee!
- The second cause is garlic.
Of course, if you are eating or even applying garlic products to your skin or hair, then, your skin is going to smell like garlic!
This is very important to understand: sometimes, the most obvious reasons are probably to blame!
So, let me tell you a little story that happened to my wife.
Some few years ago, she was suffering from yeast infection, she started consuming garlic a lot, and within just five days, she smelled like garlic all the time, well, she began worrying and thinking that’s it was something terrible going on with her health! I tried to reassure her, and I told her that it was simply caused by eating lots of garlic!
At first, she didn’t believe me, and even worse, she started thinking that she was suffering from urinary tract infection!
And indeed, when she stopped, the smell stopped as well!
My advice is to slow down on garlic and other Allium vegetables as well, including onions. These vegetables tend to leave a terrible smell on your skin, so, don’t consume them for a while, avoid them for at least three weeks in order to know for sure whether you are having too much garlic and onion or it’s something else.
- The third cause is internal infections.
For example, bladder infections and other internet infections can cause your skin to smell terrible, sometimes very garlicky and pungent as well.
In this situation, the only thing you have left to do is to consult with a doctor, he or she alone can give you the right prescription and medical treatments to get rid of this problem, and please, whatever your condition, you need to consult with a doctor as soon as possible because when your skin smells like garlic, without eating too much garlic or drinking lots of coffee, then, it’s probably due to internal infections or inflammations, and you need to consult with your doctor as quickly as possible.
- And the fourth cause is dehydration.
Dehydration is also a problem that can cause your skin to smell like garlic, it’s because sweat is going to be concentrated, and if you are suffering from fever or other health issues, then, your skin is going to smell terrible, sometimes, even garlicky.
In my opinion, the best way to get rid of your garlic smelling skin is to drink lots of water, at least three liters a day, it’s more than enough and it will keep you hydrated all day long.
